I recall staring at my computer screen for hours in September 2017, pondering the best way to approach the dreaded, yet popular college application prompt: Why Georgetown? While it took me days to weave together the perfect response, incorporating details from campus visits, the school's website, and the bios of Georgetown's most obscure clubs, my answer was ultimately so incredibly simple it was almost cliché. Georgetown offered an opportunity to become a truly global citizen, for it permitted me to learn from different people, perspectives, and disciplines, and equipped me with the skills to translate that knowledge into something that could make a difference. I hope to find a future career that offers me the same opportunity. My dream job is one that integrates multiple disciplines, allowing me to draw from their unique insights to better identify problems, brainstorm solutions, and support others. This job would not only lie at the intersection of the fields I have already studied -- economics, computer science, religious studies, philosophy/ethics, international affairs, national security, business -- but would allow me to gain exposure to new perspectives and new ideas. I hope to never stop growing or learning, and to have the opportunity to use my newfound knowledge to empower others.

U.S. Department of Justice
I interned with the U.S. Department of Justice's International Training Financial Management Group from August 2019 to September 2019. I was responsible for financial management and analysis, as well as overseeing the Department's travel requests. I managed, tracked, and updated over six hundred open obligations using Unified Financial Management Systems (UFMS) and produced financial reports to analyze program spending trends and feasibility using Jobs & Economic Development Impact Models (JEDI). Alongside my financial responsibilities, I also evaluated travel authorization forms and cooperated with program analysts to ensure policy compliance and a safe journey for hundreds of traveling federal employees each week. Upon realizing that the Department had a wide variety of policies with regard to extended travel assignments, I standardized Department-wide procedures for reviewing this type of travel and authored a handbook for later employees to reference.

I am currently interning with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency's (USTDA) Indo-Pacific Program Team. The USTDA seeks to simultaneously promote economic development worldwide and bolster U.S. firms. As a summer intern, I am responsible for identifying potential business opportunities by researching global market trends, U.S. industry competitiveness, and country-specific economic and development trends. Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security & Harvard University
I am currently serving as a research assistant for a joint project between the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security, and Harvard University. This project, Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict (SVAC) uses information from human rights reports published by the U.S. Department of State, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, to assess the prevalence of sexual violence. I use these reports to determine numerical codings for each conflict actor that represent the prevalence of the belligerent's use of sexual violence and the forms these abuses materialized in. I also prepare an extensive manuscript that offered comprehensive evidence to support each coding.

RWR Advisory Group
I interned with RWR Advisory Group, a boutique national security consulting firm, from May 2019 to August 2019. As a summer intern, I researched Russian and Chinese global business activity and evaluated each transaction for potential investment and geopolitical concerns. I used this information to update and Group's data visualization tool, IntelTrak. By June, I was also assigned to several special projects. I worked with a senior analyst to prepare a twenty-page Belt & Road Monitor every two weeks. This highly detailed newsletter tracked recent updates in Chinese development projects and assessed the feasibility, significance, and potential risks of each initiative. My research primarily centered around the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and Western Europe. I also developed a list of over three thousand Chinese, Russia, North Korean, and Syrian business entities associated with twenty-six political, economic, environmental, humanitarian, and national security risk factors.

Hudson Institute
I had the opportunity to intern with the Hudson Institute's Center for Political-Military Analysis from September 2018 to September 2019. Under the guidance of Dr. Richard Weitz, I completed a research project on a unique topic each week. I generally focused on major issues in national security and international relations, including the global arms control regime, state of great power competition, denuclearization in South Asia and the Korean peninsula, and the status of important treaties. Each project consisted of extensive literature research, which I later used to either draft a concise memorandum that synthesized thousands of pages of research or a detailed assessment of a particular topic. I often drafted extensive evaluations of specific U.S. policies and devised original policy solutions that either amended or replaced existing options. I often further supported the Hudson Institute's research initiatives by reviewing, validating, and augmenting books, academic papers, and editorial articles concerning Russia-China-US relations. In April 2019, I also had the opportunity to formulate suggestions to promote diversity in the national security and international politics career field.

University of Missouri-Columbia
I held two separate research internships at the University of Missouri-Columbia during my junior and senior years of high school. From June 2016 to July 2017, I was a nuclear engineering research intern and lab assistant with the University of Missouri's College of Engineering. Alongside assisting with existing lab work, I devised and executed an independent research project regarding the impact of long-term construction on air quality. I built an apparatus to collect air samples using a cascade impactor, multiple vacuum pumps, plastic tubing, metal fasteners, and other parts. I then examined the elemental composition of thousands of air samples using an electron microscope, as well as Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis.
The following month, I began an internship with the University of Missouri's Trulaske College of Business that lasted until August 2018. Under the tutelage of Dr. John Howe, I extensively studied theories of behavioral economics and finance, and then applied those concepts to the legal realm. I designed an independent research project regarding the impact of social networks, e.g., attending the same university as someone else, on the American justice system. I then showcased my results in a report and brief presentation. |

From August 2017 to December 2017, I worked as a cashier and line prep assistant for a small local business, I Am Sushi Burrito, an affiliate of Geisha Sushi Bar. I sought to maximize customer satisfaction at the unique, superhero-themed Asian fusion restaurant. As both a cashier and line prep assistant, I accompanied the customer throughout their entire sushi burrito journey, welcoming them as they walked into the store, recording and preparing their orders in a timely fashion, and calculating their amount due. I needed a broad understanding of the product, as I was often responsible for addressing patron questions and concerns in English, Chinese, and French. Furthermore, as I Am Sushi Burrito was a fairly small and new establishment, I had to be extremely adaptable in a highly unpredictable work environment that required me to embrace flexibility and be willing to perform additional duties at any time.
